Congratulations Ty for successfully defending your MSc Thesis!

This was the first time there were 7 posters from our group at the Chinook Symposium for Chemistry and Biochemistry. Congratulations Taylor, Stacie, Audra and Dennis for receiving all presentation awards for chemistry graduate students!

Jaxon, Dustin and Isaiah presented their work performed over the summer through the Summer Research Showcase.

The 10th European Chemical Society Chemistry Congress in Antwerp just finished. This was a great venue to establish new connections!

Who said that fluorine was not an adequate leaving group for semipinacol rearrangements? Ty, Austin & co show in a new study just published online in the Journal of Organic Chemistry that this is incorrect!

Taylor, Ty, Dennis and JD all attended the national chemistry conference. Special congratulations to Dennis for receiving a CSC National Symposium Poster Award (Organic Division) – the only one going to an undergrad – and Taylor for an Outstanding Oral Presentation Prize (Organofluorine Chemistry Symposium).

After many years of work on difluoroglycine betaines, we are excited to report a thorough understanding of their behavior supported by experimental and computational evidence. Congratulations, Austin, Elaura & co. for this study now published online in the Journal of Molecular Structure!

Congratulations Dennis for successfully defending your BSc Honours Thesis!

Congratulations Dennis for securing an NSERC CGS-M for your upcoming graduate studies!

Audra, Wilson and Jovaughna gave poster presentations on Friday at the 19th Meeting of the Minds, whereas Taylor, Ty, Stacie and Dennis gave oral presentations on Saturday. Congratulations Taylor and Dennis for receiving awards! JD also gave the keynote presentation; that was a very special experience.

Jovaughna, Audra and Stacie presented their most recent research at the U of L Women in STEM Conference. Congratulations Jovi for receiving a poster award!

Taylor, Dennis and Tyler are the authors or a new study reported in the Journal of Fluorine Chemistry, showing that the photoredox defluorinative substitution of allylic difluorides can be performed with organophotocatalysts.

Two events on the same day! First, our chapter in Modern Strategies in Organofluorine Chemistry is now available! Second, Stacie & co’s work on the transfer of fluorinated BCP’s to allylic trifluorides under redox conditions is now online in Organic Letters!

Taylor & co. strike again, this time showing an exciting expansion of the photoredox manifold to perform defluorinative C–C coupling to allylic difluorides, using 2-oxoacids as donors or acyl radicals… but also alkyl radicals! Go read this study in the European Journal of Organic Chemistry.

Ty and Taylor both attended the Banff Symposium on Organic Chemistry, where Taylor received the Org. Chem. Front. Oral Presentation Award.

It it Taylor’s turn to report a crystallographic study, this time of a fluorinated picolinamide.

In collaboration with René Boeré, Dennis reported a thorough crystallographic description of a BCP-containing compound – this work is now online!

Today was another great edition of the Chinook Symposium for Chemistry and Biochemistry. Taylor, Ty and Wilson collectively received 4 posters awards, and Stacie received an oral presentation prize. Great work!!

We came back in time for Dennis’s poster presentation at the Summer Research Showcase.

We had a fantastic time at the 21st European Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry in Lisbon, where Stacie gave a poster presentation and Taylor gave a talk.

Congratulations Elaura for successfully defending your MSc Thesis!

Huge day for the lab: congratulations Stacie for passing the PhD transfer examination, and Taylor for passing the PhD comprehensive examination!

Big showing at this year’s CSC, with 3 oral presentations from JD, and poster presentations from 5 group members: Jacob, Audra, Stacie, Ty and Austin.

New paper online in the European Journal of Organic Chemistry! Congratulations Taylor & co for this demonstration that allylic fluorides can be engaged in decarboxylative C–C coupling reactions with amino acids.

Audra is attending the 2SLGBTQ+ in STEM Conference held at the Toronto Metropolitan University!

Wilson represents the group at the Western Canadian Undergraduate Chemistry Conference!

Several group members presented their work through oral and poster presentations at the 18th Meeting of the Minds. Congratulations Audra for receiving a poster presentation award, and both Taylor and Stacie for oral presentation prizes!

Audra represented our group at the U of L Women in STEM Conference!

This was yet another great Winter Fluorine Conference, this time with the participation of Stacie, Taylor and JD.

The book chapter in PATAI’s Chemistry of Functional Groups is now available!

The trainees presented our most recent work at the Chinook Symposium for Chemistry and Biochemistry. Congratulations Jacob and Taylor for your poster awards!

The group’s first research paper is now online in the Journal of Organic Chemistry. Congratulations Taylor & co for this demonstration that allylic difluorides can be engaged in photoredox defluorinative substitutions.

Isabella, Jacob and Madeline gave poster presentations at the 2024 Summer Research Showcase after another summer of exciting chemistry in the group!

CSC 2024 in Winnipeg is a wrap. This was another great conference! JD came back pretty jealous of ‘emptyfyl’, a sculpture by Bill Pechet at the Millennium Library Park. What a beauty!

We are welcoming our first PDF in the group. Austin is co-supervised by Stacey Wetmore in computational chemistry, and Austin’s PDF is supported by an Alberta Innovates Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Congratulations Christy for successfully defending your BSc Honours Thesis!

Congratulations Taylor for receiving a oral presentation prize at the 17th Meeting of the Minds!

Christy, Audra and Elaura took part in this year’s U of L Women in STEM Conference. Congratulations Christy for your poster award!

The whole group gave presentations at the 16th Chinook Symposium for Chemistry and Biochemistry, bringing back 3 poster awards and 1 oral presentation award! Special congratulations to Elaura, Ryley and Taylor!

This summer’s undergrads – Christy, Ty, Madison, Isabella, Jovaughna, Esther and Ryley – presented their research to the local community through the UofL’s Student Research Celebration.

Taylor and JD are attending the International Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry in Quebec City. It is set to be a wonderful conference!

Congratulations Taylor for passing the PhD transfer examination!

JD is presenting Ty’s work at CSC to highlight some great undergraduate research.

Christy is the first member of the group to attend the Western Canadian Undergraduate Chemistry Conference.

Taylor just gave his first research oral presentation at the 16th Meeting of the Minds.

Group members are participating for the first time to the Winter Fluorine Conference in Florida. We are all pretty pumped to escape the cold momentarily.

Group members received 5 poster awards at the 15th Chinook Symposium for Chemistry and Biochemistry. Fantastic work from everybody!

Elaura and Taylor and presenting our group’s work for the first time at the national chemistry conference!

Happy to report that, a few months back, JD was named the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Organofluorine Chemistry and Catalysis!

Taylor is the first graduate student to join the Hamel group – Welcome to the team!

Elaura is the first trainee to join the group!
